New Delhi: A 16-year-old girl was attacked with a chemical allegedly by a schoolboy in North Delhi’s Burari last week. The boy cited his motivation for the incident as a general ‘dislike for girls.’ Police said they had arrested the boy, who claimed a general dislike for girls and asserted choosing the victim at random.

The survivor told the police that the incident occurred when she had left home to get her cousin from school at 1 pm on January 24th. “As the girl arrived at Shastri Park Extension, a boy threw a chemical that burned her eyes, neck, and nose. The girl was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment after which she was eventually discharged,” said the police.

Investigations found no animosity between the accused and the survivor that could have motivated the attack. “After a team spotted a boy running away from the crime scene, they suspected the incident to have happened about a kilometer away from the camera. Police secured this critical footage, where his attire matched the description given by the survivor,” the officer added.

The suspect was dressed in blue trousers, a white handkerchief mask, a jacket, a backpack, and sports shoes. Noticing the distinctive backpack, the police raided the two schools in the vicinity. “From dawn to dusk, officers in plain clothes kept an eye on the student crowd. Their eyes caught a boy carrying a backpack matching the exact description,” police said. When the boy was stopped by the officers and questioned, he confessed to the crime. Crucial evidence was also collected from that boy.

A senior official provided information on the chemical: the boy had dissolved caustic powder in water, filled a small bottle with the solution, and threw it at the girl. Police said the boy is a resident of Burari, with no prior connection to the victim. They recovered the bottle, his clothes, his bag, a handkerchief, and a tracksuit top from his possession.
