On Wednesday, the Republican-dominated House of Representatives formally authorized the impeachment inquiry on President Joe Biden. The chamber approved the probe based on allegations surrounding 53-year-old Hunter Biden (Joe Biden’s son), involving his questionable international dealings. President Biden, in his response, has termed the move as a “baseless political stunt” with no proper evidence against him presented by the Republicans.

He said, “I wake up every day focused on the issues facing the American people – real issues that impact their lives, and the strength and security of our country and the world. Unfortunately, House Republicans are not joining me. Instead of doing anything to help make Americans’ lives better, they are focused on attacking me with lies.” The allegation against junior Biden involves influence-peddling in Ukraine and China, but the White House mentions that no such act occurred.

The resolution was passed by a margin of 221-212 along party lines, and the Republicans were in complete support of the process, which can lead to a penalty on the President. The penalty may be in the form of a punishment as described in the Constitution as “high crimes and misdemeanors.” As a result, this can lead to removal from office if proven guilty in the Senate trial. The voting process was conducted in the presence of Speaker Mike Johnson after a year-long speculation on the dealings of Biden family members. The probe has raised questions, but no concrete evidence has been found that could prove Biden to be corrupt in both the role of President and the previous role of Vice President.

In its statement, the White House has termed the entire process “a baseless fishing expedition” on the part of the Republicans, “despite the fact that members of their own party have admitted there is no evidence to support impeaching President Biden.”
