The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution, introduced by Egypt, titled “Protection of civilians and upholding legal and humanitarian obligations.” Out of the 193 member nations of the United Nations, 153 nations, including India, supported the resolution. Ten member nations, including the US, Israel, and Austria, were against the resolution, while 23 member nations abstained from voting. The resolution calls for crucial measures like an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages, humanitarian assistance, and adherence to international laws to protect civilians.

What did Ruchira Kamboj say in the UNGA?

Ruchira Kamboj, India’s permanent representative to the UN, outlined some crucial factors while addressing the assembly. She said, “India has voted in favor of the resolution just adopted by the General Assembly. The situation that this August body has been deliberating upon has many dimensions. There is the terrorist attack in Israel on 7 October and the concern for the hostages taken at that time. There is an enormous humanitarian crisis and a large-scale loss of civilian lives, especially women and children. There is the issue of observing international humanitarian law in all circumstances. And there is the endeavor to find a peaceful and lasting two-state solution to the longstanding Palestine question…Our challenge, in this extraordinarily difficult time, is to strike the right balance. The gravity and complexity of what the international community faces are underlined by the Secretary-General invoking Article 99 of the Charter of the United Nations. We, therefore, welcome the fact that the international community unity has been able to find common ground to address the multiple challenges facing the region right now.”

Previously, in October, India had abstained from voting on the resolution passed by the General Assembly that called for an immediate truce between the warring countries, leading to a cessation of hostilities and unhindered humanitarian assistance in the Gaza strip.
