Formerly known as the Costume Institute Gala or Costume Institute Benefit, the Met Gala or Met Ball is hosted annually by the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan as a fundraising gala. Referred to as “fashion’s biggest night,” the Met Gala is the world’s most prestigious and glamorous fashion event and social gathering. An invitation is highly coveted. Hosted by the fashion magazine Vogue, the Met Gala invites individuals from various professional fields—fashion, film, television, theatre, music, sports, business, social media, and politics—who are culturally relevant to contemporary society. Attending the annual gala in New York City, the world’s primary financial center, will cost $75,000 in 2024, up from $50,000 in 2023.
The fashion industry’s biggest night has arrived! The Met Gala red carpet for 2024 has officially begun at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This year’s exhibit, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” explores how technology can breathe new life into garments that are too old and fragile to wear again. Tonight, guests will ascend the museum’s famed steps wearing outfits inspired by the event’s “The Garden of Time” dress code, and you can see all of the Met Gala looks for 2024 right here as the night begins.
The night’s sartorial theme is inspired by a J.G. Ballard story about a count who, in order to keep an angry mob from approaching his castle, cuts a rose from his garden, slowing down time until the garden is depleted of roses. Given the story’s dystopian themes and the exhibit’s focus on the old and new, we can expect a red carpet decked out in everything from techno-inspired clothing to floral arrangements, possibly with a nod to Sleeping Beauty. Let us see which look nailed the Met Gala in terms of theme and creativity:
1. Lana Del Rey in Alexander McQueen
The color of the dress itself evokes memories of the past. The lifeless branches and the cobweb draped above it make it appropriate for the theme. In terms of creativity, it ranks at the top.
2. Nicki Minaj
What images do we have in mind when we think of gardens? Green leaves and various brightly colored flowers. Nicki’s costume, combined with the little fairy Tinker Bell, creates a very upbeat atmosphere.
3. Gwendoline Christie
The costume, attitude, and aura all give Maleficent from the Disney animated film “Sleeping Beauty” a vibe.
4. Zendaya
Color combinations, small details of green and round fruits that may be edible or poisonous. The darker lipstick. The way she pulls it off—a big yes!
5. Sydney Sweeney
Powder-blue Miu Miu’s Cinderella-inspired gown has sheer romantic sleeves and a voluminous skirt. The piece was accented with black twigs and turquoise flower appliqués throughout.
Sweeney finished off her edgy springtime look with a pair of black leather opera gloves, and her sleek black bob topped it all off.
She accessorized with stunning diamond jewelry from De Beers, including Sleeper drop earrings and a matching Assana necklace. The diamonds complemented her shimmery makeup, which included silver glitter applied to her face and neck.
6. Haris Reed
Reed’s design debuted on the runway in February as part of the “Shadow Dance” collection for Fall 2024.
The fact that the entire wallpaper has been upcycled. That, in my opinion, is a very distinct viewpoint on the concepts of decay and fragility. The dress’s fabric is delicate and easy to rip, but it takes up a lot of space and is very graphic.
7. Demi Moore
Moore wore a stunning Cartier necklace with her dress, which was made of a 60-year-old silk panel with arrow-like spikes.
8. Amelia Grey
The look, styled by Danyul Brown and accessorized with Messika jewelry, was ideal for the red carpet theme of “The Garden of Time,” as well as the Costume Institute exhibition “Sleeping Beauties: Awakening Fashion,” which will be honored at this year’s Met Gala. 9. Tyla
Tyla was wearing a sand sculpture of her own body. The year’s theme matched the hourglass purse she carried. The concept of ephemerality for Tyla’s dress appealed to Olivier Rousteing, Balmain’s creative director, who wanted to push boundaries and transform a temporary material into a timeless work of art.
10. Gigi Hadid
Hadid is wearing a white off-the-shoulder corset dress with exaggerated hips, which is layered beneath a white silk moiré coat with black duchesse satin tipping and 3D yellow roses. The entire look, which was meticulously crafted by a team of over 70 people over the course of 13,500 hours, will be kept in Browne’s permanent archive after the Met Gala.
Hadid’s stylist, Mimi Cuttrell, was inspired by plant-adorned garden statues, particularly those found in ancient Italian gardens. She adores how the light reflects beautiful yellow tones against the stone, which inspired the creation of yellow jewelry to complement Gigi’s appearance.
