For the third time in a row, Narendra Modi was about to become prime minister. In the meantime, he was surprisingly denied a majority in the Lok Sabha, with political parties such as the Congress, Samajwadi Party, and Trinamool Congress.

The losses suffered by Akhilesh Yadav‘s SP in the saffron stronghold of UP, which had been instrumental in Modi’s previous two victories. The astute cooperation of Congress, Uddhav Thackeray, and Sharad Pawar in Maharashtra, and Mamata Banerjee’s victorious defense of her Bengal bastion were the main causes of the drop of more than sixty seats.

Thanks to its triumph in Odisha, the TDP’s sweeping of Andhra Pradesh, and the preservation of its strongholds in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, the BJP avoided a disastrous situation. It continued to rule Bihar alongside ally JD(U) and did well in Assam, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand.

While Modi became the first prime minister to win three consecutive terms since Jawaharlal Nehru in 1962, the success of his bid to become the first to obtain an absolute majority and the subsequent return of coalition politics subdued the euphoria.

Even while the BJP’s score of 241 is much below the 400+ mark that Modi had set for himself and the two single-party majorities that came before it, it is nevertheless a respectable showing for a government that will be in office for ten years.

Due to its loss of majority, the BJP now depends on partners from both smaller and larger parties, such as Chirag Paswan’s LJP and TDP (16) and JD-U (12). Without delay, all three vowed to support Modi. However, Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu are both renowned for their maximalist methodology and transactional viewpoint. For the BJP, the threat of exploiting their influence would never go away, especially with the encouragement of the Congress and other opposition parties.
