Overnight assaults by Russian forces involving drones and missiles have inflicted significant casualties in Ukraine, with at least six people reported dead and 11 wounded in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, according to local officials. The Governor of the Kharkiv region, Oleh Syniehubov, detailed the damage caused by missile strikes, which targeted residential buildings, a gas station, a kindergarten, a cafe, a shop, and numerous vehicles.

The onslaught involved 32 Iranian-made Shahed drones and six missiles, according to the Ukrainian air force commander. Ukrainian air defense forces successfully intercepted three cruise missiles and downed 28 drones, stated Lt. Gen. Mykola Oleshchuk. He condemned the ongoing terror inflicted by Russian forces on Ukrainian civilians, particularly in Kharkiv and other peaceful cities.

While the Russian military has remained silent regarding the attacks, they alleged that Ukraine launched Vampire rockets at Russia on Saturday morning. The Russian Defense Ministry asserted that all ten rockets were intercepted over the Belgorod border region by Russian air defense systems.

Meanwhile, on the ground in Ukraine, reports indicate advancing Russian forces encountering resistance. Oleksandr Syrskyi, commander of Ukraine’s armed forces, described the challenging situation in the Bakhmut area of the eastern Donetsk region, where Russian forces are conducting relentless offensive operations utilizing assault groups, armored vehicles, and foot assaults.

Syrskyi emphasized ongoing fierce battles east of the town of Chasiv Yar, which remains under Ukrainian control despite proximity to the occupied city of Bakhmut. Despite Russian attempts to breach defensive lines, Ukrainian forces maintain control over Chasiv Yar, as confirmed by Syrskyi via the messaging app Telegram.

In Avdiivka, another city held by Russian forces in the Donetsk region, intense fighting centered around Pervomaiskyi and Vodyanyi, according to Syrskyi. Tensions also persist along the southern and northeastern sectors of the front line, reflecting the continued volatility and challenges faced by Ukrainian forces in repelling Russian aggression.

The escalation in hostilities underscores the urgent need for international efforts to de-escalate the conflict and pursue diplomatic solutions to bring an end to the suffering endured by civilians caught in the crossfire.
