In recent years, Indian students going abroad for studies have seen a remarkable surge, reflecting a huge demand for top-class and the best education facilities, as this somehow lacks in the Indian educational infrastructure. Exposure to the global educational system due to inadequate learning facilities and technological disparities has led to a rise in the percentage of students going abroad for study.
The rise of over 52.2% among students studying abroad has been seen over the past 5 years, increasing from 586,337 in 2019 to 892,989 in 2023, according to data presented by the Ministry of Education in the Rajya Sabha. This steady growth, apart from a dip during the pandemic in 2020, reflects the rising aspirations of Indian students to seek global academic opportunities.
Canada saw the highest percentage increase of students going for further studies from India, with a 76% increase in enrollment among Indian students. Meanwhile, the United States saw the highest number of enrollments by Indian students and remains the top destination for Indians seeking educational collaborations. Second is Canada, followed by the UK, with 233,532 and 136,921 students, respectively.
Despite the diplomatic tensions between India and Canada, the latter saw the highest percentage increase and growth in Indian students’ enrollment. The strained relationship began in 2020 following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s support for Indian farmers’ protests and further deteriorated in 2024 with mutual diplomatic expulsions over the killing of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada.
Another long-standing favorite among students was Australia, with over 78,093 Indian students enrolled in 2023. Despite strict travel restrictions in 2020, Australia continues to attract students, particularly in the fields of healthcare, engineering, and business.
