Amidst the impending conclusion of Rahul Dravid’s coaching contract with the Indian men’s cricket team after the ICC World Cup 2023, the cricketing community is abuzz with speculation about the leadership of the squad during the upcoming T20 International series against Australia, set to commence on November 23 in Visakhapatnam.

Rahul Dravid, the current head coach, has the option to seek reappointment. However, there are murmurs that he may opt to return to his commitments in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

A potential shift in leadership offers the players an opportunity for a fresh perspective, particularly after the grueling ODI World Cup schedule, which involved extensive travel across the nation, covering over 10,000 kilometers.

Most members of the team are anticipated to enjoy a well-deserved break following the ICC World Cup 2023, with one notable exception, Suryakumar Yadav, as per insider sources from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Moreover, insiders have hinted at VVS Laxman taking the reins for the series.

“VVS Laxman has consistently stepped in as the leader when Rahul Dravid has taken a hiatus, and it’s likely to remain the same for the series immediately following the World Cup,” revealed an anonymous source within the BCCI to PTI.

Further adding to the intrigue is the potential appointment of Sitansu Kotak as the team’s batting coach if Laxman accepts the role. Kotak is also poised to guide India’s ‘A’ team on their shadow tour of South Africa.

The BCCI’s approach to coaching selections has been notably inclined toward candidates well-versed in the domestic systems and pathways, which positions Laxman as a formidable contender. The majority of players for the Australia series are expected to be chosen from squads that participated in the T20 series against Ireland, the West Indies, and the Asian Games.
