The arrival of migrants has caused a lot of tensions on the Poland–Belarus border. The Polish guards have been pushing migrants back and forth to Belarus. There have been tensions over migration as public sentiment is turning anti-immigration, and this is just fueling the fire for the far right, who are targeting the centrists for their immigration policies and trying to leverage themselves for gaining votes in the EU Parliament elections.
Especially on the Poland–Belarus border, there is an extra geopolitical edge. Poland, along with the rest of the EU, has time and again blamed Russia and its close ally Belarus for sending migrants to the European Union. Warsaw has often referred to this as “hybrid warfare,” even though both Moscow and Minsk have dismissed such allegations.
Lately, the number of migrants arriving at this border has relatively increased, and there have also been skirmishes along the border between the migrants and soldiers. On the 28th of May, a soldier succumbed to his wounds from confrontations with a migrant, which Poland has now seen as a war casualty.
In response to this, the Polish government of the centrist pro-EU Prime Minister Donald Tusk has declared the border a no-go zone once again. His defense minister, Pawel Zalewski, told news agency Reuters, “This border is not safe, unfortunately. The purpose of this zone is to ensure that no one is exposed to the attacks that Polish soldiers are exposed to.”
