Pakistan’s leading political parties, excluding jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s PTI, announced on Tuesday that they will form a coalition government led by Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), ending the confusion and deadlock seen in the elections earlier this week. Nawaz Sharif has nominated his younger brother and PML-N president, Shehbaz Sharif, for the slot of Prime Minister of Pakistan, and his daughter for the CM of Punjab province.

PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb stated, “Nawaz Sharif, 74, has nominated his younger brother Shehbaz Sharif, 72, as a candidate for the slot of Prime Minister and his daughter, Maryam Nawaz, 50, for Chief Minister of Punjab province. Nawaz Sharif has thanked the political parties which provided support to the PML-N (in forming the government) and expressed hope that through such decisions, Pakistan will come out of crises.”

“Today we have united to tell the nation that we all accept the split mandate. I am thankful to Zardari and Bilawal that they decided for their party to vote for the PML-N,” he said. To form a government, a party must win 133 seats out of the 265 contested seats in the National Assembly. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced that the independent candidates supported by the PTI secured 101 seats, followed by PML-N with 75 seats, PPP with 54 seats, and MQM-P getting 17 seats.

With all the key parties forming a coalition to form the new government, the transition to actually forming the government is likely to take place by the end of February.
