In a groundbreaking achievement, Norwegian flight Boeing 787 Dreamliner touched down on the icy expanse at Troll airfield in Antarctica on November 15, 2023, marking a historic moment for Norse aviation.
Taking advantage of 24-hour sunlight in Antarctica due to the summer months, it became the first Norwegian aircraft to set its main gear on Antarctic ice and the largest to do so.
The 330-feet blue ice runway has been called one of the closest things Antarctica has to an air hub.
Capable of accommodating over 300 passengers, the aircraft successfully carried a 45-member team comprising researchers and staff from the Norwegian Polar Research Institute who were overseeing the project.
