The Centre and various other coastal states are coming together to address critical challenges and frame a blueprint for India’s marine fisheries. In this regard, NITI Aayog is set to convene a high-level national workshop on harnessing the potential of fisheries in marine states on 5th January, Friday.

The meeting’s main discussion will be on the issues related to the sector and the introduction of strategies for optimal utilization of marine resources. NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Suman Bery and Member Ramesh Chand, along with other representatives from NITI Aayog, Union Fisheries Ministry, and the fisheries departments of nine coastal States and one Union Territory, will take an active part in the meet.

Government representatives from West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andaman and Nicobar will attend the workshop.

This workshop will be organized in association with the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFR); and Kerala Fisheries Department. A diverse array of stakeholders, including policymakers from the Centre and the State governments, leading industry experts, and researchers, will attend the meet, which will serve as a platform for experience sharing between marine States, enabling open dialogue on the challenges faced and the potential solutions.

The workshop will focus on critical aspects of certification and sustainability, market linkages, value addition, and seafood export. It assumes significance as the sector is seeking concentrated efforts and cooperation between coastal States and the Centre for unlocking the potential of India’s marine wealth.

The goal is to develop tailored strategies and partnerships for addressing the challenges and exploring the prospects, a press release stated. The workshop will be held from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm. CMRFI director A. Gopalakrishnan has been asked to prepare a National Marine Fisheries Index (NMFI) to derive a comparative picture of marine fisheries development across maritime states, including Andaman and Nicobar along with Lakshadweep islands.

The event is a testament to the commitment of NITI Aayog and its partners in promoting sustainable fishing practices, adopting advanced technology, and implementing policy reforms to boost the marine fisheries industry.

The assembly will comprise key policymakers, industry connoisseurs, and researchers who will explore various pertinent topics in the workshop. It would change the entire functioning of the fisheries industry, then we would be able to see a new face of the industry.
