Nepal: Saurya Airlines Plane Crashed In Kathmandu, 18 Dead; 1 Rescued

A plane has crashed in Nepal’s Tribhuvan International Airport at Kathmandu. The plane was carrying two crew members and 17 technicians to Pokhara city for maintenance checks. Out of 19 people, 18 have died. Pilot Manish Shankya was rescued and taken to the hospital and is undergoing treatment for a head injury.

According to Kathmandu Post, immediately after the accident, a team of police, army, and firefighters reached the spot for the rescue operation. According to a news agency, a security official said that the plane caught fire after the crash. It was extinguished immediately.

According to an eyewitness present at the spot, speaking to Kathmandu Post, said, “The plane was taking off from the southern end of the runway. Suddenly it jerked and caught fire. After this, it crashed near Buddha Air Hangar and Radar Station on the eastern side of the runway. Fell into a pit in the middle.”

The plane belonged to local Saurya Airlines, media said. Saurya operates domestic flights in Nepal with Two Bombardier CRJ-200 regional jets, both around 20 years old made in 2003, according to Flight Radar 24.

12 plane accidents took place in Nepal in 14 years. The air industry in Nepal has grown significantly in the last few years. It is also providing services in many difficult and hilly areas. However, accidents often happen here due to poor security arrangements and lack of training.

An average of one plane crash occurs every year in Nepal. Since 2010, 12 planes have crashed. A major plane accident took place here on January 14, 2023. The Yeti Airlines plane had crashed in Pokhara, 205 Km from Kathmandu. It was an ATR-72 plane with 68 passengers and four crew members on board.

The plane hit a hill just 10 seconds before landing at Pokhara International Airport. Due to this, the plane caught fire and it fell into a ditch. All 72 people died in the accident. Earlier on 29 May 2022, an airplane crashed in Mustang district. 22 people died in this accident.

In 2018, a US-Bangla Airlines plane crashed near Tribhuvan Airport in Kathmandu. 51 people died in this, while 20 were seriously injured. Seeing the frequent plane accidents in Nepal, the European Union has banned Nepalese carriers in its airspace. According to Reuters, nearly 350 people have died in plane or helicopter crashes since 2000. When a Pakistan International Airlines Airbus crashed into a hillside while approaching Kathmandu, killing 167 people.
