Lok Sabha Election Phase 1 Begun With The Voting For 102 Seats

April 19 witnessed the largest election in the history of India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is running for an unprecedented third term. It marked the start of voting in 102 constituencies spread across 17 states and four Union Territories. It is for the first round of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The Union Ministers are Jitendra Singh, Sarbanada Sonowal, Nitin Gadkari, Bhupendra Yadav, and Kiren Rijiju. Along with Gaurav Gogoi of the Congress, Kanimozhi of the DMK, and K. Annamalai, the head of the Tamil Nadu BJP, they are also involved in this phase.

Polling place lines formed far in advance of its 7:00 a.m. opening time. The voters adhere to tight security protocols. With 1.87 lakh polling places and over 16.63 crore voters scheduled to cast ballots today, nearly 18 lakh poll workers have been deployed. Through the voters’ registration, the estimated first-time voter numbers are 35.67 lakh. Moreover, in the age group of 20–29, the estimated voter number stands at 3.51 crore. Voting from home is an option for around 14.14 lakh registered voters 85 years of age and older. 13.89 lakh PwD voters in 102 PCs. ECI reports that favourable feedback has already been received on the optional home voting feature.

The central government fulfilled its part by giving the voters and the presiding officers protection. According to the electoral board, 41 helicopters, 84 special trains, and almost one lakh automobiles were reportedly used to carry poll workers and security personnel. The webcasting services are available at almost half of the voting places. Nevertheless, microobservers will be there in every voting place. 361 observers have already descended to their allotted areas. Among them, 127 are general observers, 67 are police observers, and 167 are expenditure observers. 

Southern India accounted for the greatest number of seats in the first phase. There are 1 seat from Puducherry and 39 counted from Tamil Nadu. As the BJP attempted to establish a presence in the state, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made several trips there while on campaign. The dominant Dravidian parties, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the governing Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), are still the front-runners, nevertheless.

Today marks the beginning and finish of elections in the following states: Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, and Puducherry. There will be two voting phases for Karnataka, Rajasthan, Tripura, and Manipur. Elections in Assam and Chhattisgarh will take place in three phases, while polling in Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Jharkhand will take place in four phases.

Phase 2 will see 89 Lok Sabha seats go to the polls across 13 states and UTs. Elections to all 20 seats in Kerala will be held during the second phase on April 26. The Lok Sabha elections of 2024 will be conducted across seven phases, starting on April 19. Followed by subsequent phases on April 26, May 7, May 13, May 20, May 25, and June 1. Vote counting will be done on June 4.
