The Defence Ministry will hold a critical meeting this week wherein two of India’s largest-ever fighter aircraft projects, valued at Rs 1.3 lakh crore, will be discussed. These projects include the purchase of 97 new LCA Mark 1A fighter aircraft and the in-house modification of 84 Su-30 MKI combat aircraft.

“The projects are scheduled to come up for discussion at the Defence Ministry meeting scheduled on November 30,” sources in the defence industry told ANI.

According to sources, the 97 LCA Mark1A project will support the nation’s efforts to develop a robust fighter aircraft manufacturing sector nationwide and assist the Indian Air Force in replacing its gradually depreciating MiG-21 fleet.

The Defence Acquisition Council meeting on November 30 is scheduled to discuss the two projects.

Deliveries of the 83 LCA Mark1A fighter aircraft that the Indian Air Force has already ordered are scheduled to begin in February or March of 2024.

It is anticipated that the 97 aircraft will fetch approximately Rs 65,000 crore, making it the biggest fighter aircraft transaction in the history of the nation.

The Su-30 MKI fighter aircraft project upgrade program is one of the largest projects ever intended to be carried out entirely in India, involving the installation of Indian weapons, sensors, and radars on Russian-origin aircraft.

It is anticipated that the project will cost about Rs 64,000 crores.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, an Indian company, will handle all aspects of the aircraft’s design and development, including outfitting it with the newest Virupaksha AESA radars.

With 260 of them currently in service, Su-30 fighter jets are the backbone of the Indian Air Force. The jets, which were brought in various batches, currently make up about half of the fighter fleet.

The Indian Air Force views the Su-30MKI fleet upgrade plan as a chance for exports because the aircraft is operated by numerous nations in Southeast Asia and Africa, which can utilize these solutions to give their fleets more sophisticated capabilities.
