In a significant move aimed at bolstering the nation’s military capabilities, India’s Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, has granted preliminary approval for acquiring 97 Tejas light combat aircraft and 156 Prachand helicopters. Additionally, the DAC greenlit the Indian Air Force’s proposal to upgrade its Su-30 fighter fleet.
The comprehensive upgrade agenda, including the procurement of these advanced aircraft, and the Su-30 enhancement initiative, is anticipated to incur an estimated cost of Rs 1.6 lakh crore for the exchequer. Detailed specifics about these approved projects are expected to be released by the defence ministry soon.
According to officials within the Defence Ministry, the approved acquisitions comprise 97 LCA Mark 1A fighter jets for the Indian Air Force, amounting to approximately Rs 65,000 crores. The DAC’s clearance also encompasses the purchase of 156 LCH Prachand choppers, and an upgrade plan for 84 Su-30MKI fighters. These investments, totaling Rs 1.6 lakh crore, primarily focus on indigenous projects.
Developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the Tejas serves as a versatile platform designed for air defence, maritime reconnaissance, and strike operations. The forthcoming Tejas Mk-1A, a Light Combat Aircraft iteration, will boast updated avionics, an active electronically steered radar, an enhanced electronic warfare suite, and expanded beyond-visual-range missile capabilities. This advanced variant is set to wield diverse weapon systems from extended operational ranges, significantly augmenting the nation’s aerial combat capabilities.
