Congress leader Sachin Pilot on Monday declared that the party has emerged as a robust alternative to the ruling parties in Delhi and at the Centre, presenting a superior governance blueprint ahead of the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections.
Pilot said, “Congress has emerged as a better alternative than the parties ruling at the centre and in the state in Delhi. It has presented a better blueprint in Delhi. The INDIA alliance was and is always strong enough to fight against the NDA, but looking at the situations in different states and local units, groups take their own decisions.”
Despite the alliance’s collective goal of challenging the NDA, Pilot highlighted that local units and state-level groups adapt strategies based on regional dynamics. His statement underscores Congress’ growing confidence as it prepares for the February 5 elections, where voting will take place in a single phase, with results slated for February 8.
The Congress has already announced 68 candidates for Delhi’s 70 Assembly seats, intensifying competition with the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The AAP has declared candidates for all 70 seats, while the BJP released its fourth list on Thursday, naming nine more candidates and bringing its total to 68, leaving two seats for its allies.
The main battleground in the election is the New Delhi seat, where the Congress has fielded Sandeep Dixit while the BJP has fielded former MP Parvesh Verma. The AAP is campaigning vigorously to retain its dominance, with former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia exuding confidence in the party’s prospects.
The Delhi Assembly election is witnessing a triangular contest between the AAP, BJP, and Congress. In the last 2020 assembly elections, AAP won a landslide victory by winning 62 out of 70 seats, while the BJP got only eight seats. Congress, which ruled Delhi for 15 consecutive years till 2013, has failed to win a single seat in the last two assembly elections and is struggling to make a comeback.
As the campaign gathers pace, the election will test whether the Congress is able to capitalise on its newfound confidence, the BJP is able to expand its reach, or the AAP is able to retain its dominance in the capital.
