The leader of the Trinamool Congress, Sheikh Shahjahan, has been ordered to be arrested by the Calcutta High Court on charges of sexual assault and land grabbing in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal. Since the accusations were first made public four years ago, the court has been dismissive of the government’s lack of response. The court ordered authorities to notify the public of the legal activities against Shahjahan and declared that there was no stay on his arrest. The hearing is scheduled to resume on March 4.
During the hearings, it was revealed that up to December of the previous year, 43 FIRs had been recorded, 42 of which resulted in the submission of charge sheets. Since a crowd attacked Enforcement Directorate agents on January 5, Shahjahan has not been sighted. There have been several violent rallies in the area lately; on Monday, women demonstrators destroyed the home of Trinamool Congress politician Sankar Sardar.
Abhishek Banerjee, the general secretary of the TMC, denied accusations on Sunday that he was protecting Shahjahan, saying the police have their hands “tied”. He stated “The masters and defenders of human rights are saying in the light every day, arrest him, arrest him, what will the police do if the High Court ties their hands? ED officials were assaulted on January 5, the Calcutta High Court constituted a SIT in the incident.”
The Trinamool Congress party, led by Mamata Banerjee, has distanced itself from Shahjahan, stating that he does not hold any official position within the party. The party has also faced criticism for handling the situation, with some accusing it of shielding Shahjahan due to his past political association.
The development comes amidst growing tensions in the region. While some residents have expressed support for Shahjahan, others have called for his arrest and a thorough investigation into the allegations. The case remains under investigation, with authorities intensifying their search for the absconding leader.
