The Euro 2024 qualifier between Belgium and Sweden came to a halt after two Swedes were tragically shot dead in a Brussels attack on Monday, leading to security concerns that prompted spectators to be kept inside the King Baudouin stadium in the Belgian capital.

At halftime, an announcement was made that the players would not return for the second half, and UEFA subsequently announced the abandonment of the match, citing a suspected terrorist attack in Brussels. The suspect behind the shooting remains at large.

According to the Swedish Football Association, Belgian police advised supporters to remain in the arena for security reasons. The Belgian Prime Minister described the attack as an act of “terrorism.”

Notably, the two individuals killed in the attack were reported to be wearing Sweden’s national team jerseys. Both the Swedish FA and the Belgian national team expressed their condolences and thoughts to the affected individuals.

The match stood at 1-1, with Belgium, already qualified for the 2024 tournament, equalizing through a Romelu Lukaku penalty after Viktor Gyokeres initially opened the scoring for Sweden before the game was abruptly halted.”
