Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat, who took part in last year’s protest against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, officially joined the Congress party on Friday.
Olympic bronze medalist and Congress leader Bajrang Punia criticized former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Singh on Saturday after Singh remarked that Vinesh Phogat “deserved to be disqualified” from the Paris Olympics. The comments came a day after both Punia and Phogat joined the Congress party. Singh, the former BJP MP, questioned the circumstances under which Bajrang participated in the Asian Games without trials and challenged the fairness of Vinesh Phogat’s qualification process, suggesting she advanced through “cheating.”
Responding to Singh’s remarks, Punia told India Today that these comments reveal Singh’s attitude towards the country, emphasizing that Vinesh’s loss was a setback for all Indians, not just her. He further criticized those celebrating her disqualification, questioning their patriotism, and accused Singh’s camp of molesting girls.
At a Friday press conference, Punia expressed his commitment to strengthening both the Congress party and the nation, mentioning that while there was joy when Vinesh qualified for the finals, the mood turned somber the next day due to an IT cell celebrating her disqualification.
The Congress party, which released its first list of 31 candidates for the Haryana assembly elections on Friday, has named Phogat as its candidate from the Julana constituency. Voting for the 90-member Haryana Assembly will take place on October 5, with the results being announced on October 8.
