A woman was allegedly forced to remove her hijab, and a Hindu man accompanying her was assaulted by a group of men in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, on Tuesday. A video of the incident, which quickly went viral on social media, triggered widespread outrage.

In the footage, a man is seen forcibly taking off the woman’s hijab, while others hurl verbal abuse, harass, and physically attack both her and her companion. The incident took place in a narrow alley in the Khalapar area, where 20-year-old Farheen and a man named Sachin were en route to collect a loan installment. Farheen, an employee of Utkarsh Small Finance Limited and a resident of Khalapar, was accompanied by Sachin on a motorcycle as instructed by her mother, Farhana.

While passing through the area, the duo was confronted by a group of 8–10 men who allegedly abused and assaulted them. A bystander captured the entire incident on a mobile phone, and the video quickly spread across social media platforms, prompting swift public and official attention.

Police arrived at the scene shortly after being alerted, dispersed the mob, and safely escorted the pair to the local police station. Following Farheen’s complaint, a case was registered under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. “On April 12, between 4 and 4:30 PM, a Hindu man from Bhavan and a Muslim woman from Khalapar, both working with Utkarsh Small Finance Bank, were returning from Sujdu after collecting a loan installment when they were stopped and attacked by local men in Darzi Wali Gali,” said Muzaffarnagar City CO Raju Kumar Sao.

Following the complaint, six suspects were arrested. Videos later showed them limping while in police custody, escorted by officers — though some social media users speculated the limping was exaggerated or staged.

“Further arrests will be made as more suspects are identified through the video. Stringent legal action will be taken,” CO Raju Kumar Sao added.
