In Uttar Pradesh’s Banda, two women and two men were arrested for orchestrating a scheme to deceive single men into marriage and then rob them of cash and jewelry.
According to the police, Poonam Mishra posed as the bride, while Sanjana Gupta pretended to be her mother. The two male accomplices, Vimalesh Verma and Dharmendra Prajapati, identified potential victims and introduced them to Poonam. The group allegedly charged matchmaking fees from the targets and arranged simple court weddings. After the ceremony, Poonam would move into the groom’s home, wait for an opportune moment, and flee with valuables.
The gang had successfully carried out six such heists before targeting Shankar Upadhyay, the complainant. Upadhyay, a single man seeking a match, was approached by Vimalesh, who promised to arrange his marriage for ₹1.5 lakh. Upadhyay agreed but grew suspicious when asked to pay upfront during a court meeting with Poonam.
Upadhyay requested Aadhaar cards for verification, which further unsettled the accused. “I suspected from their behavior that they were trying to con me. When I refused to proceed with the marriage, they threatened to harm me and frame me in false cases. I claimed I needed time to think and left,” Upadhyay reported.
Shiv Raj, Additional Police Superintendent of Banda, confirmed receiving the complaint. “The accused were conning people under the pretense of marriage. Upon receiving the complaint, we promptly acted and arrested four individuals, including two women. Further investigations are underway,” he said.
