Kerala police arrested a 41-year-old woman on Monday for allegedly enabling the rape and sexual abuse of her underage relative by a High Court lawyer. The woman, a Konni resident tasked with caring for the girl in the absence of her mother, reportedly handed her over to the lawyer.
While the woman is the second accused in the case, the primary suspect—the lawyer—remains at large, according to a PTI report.
The abuse reportedly began on June 10 last year in a hotel room in Kozhencherry, where the lawyer allegedly drugged and assaulted the girl. The abuse continued until June of this year. The lawyer is also accused of threatening to release videos of the assaults to silence the victim.
The Child Welfare Committee in Pathanamthitta intervened, rescuing the girl and recording her statement. The case was initially registered at the Konni police station and later transferred to the Aranmula police station, as it fell under their jurisdiction. The woman is now in police custody, and efforts are underway to apprehend the lawyer.
Child sexual abuse cases are alarmingly on the rise in Kerala, with children facing threats even in homes and schools, as highlighted by a recent report from the Kerala State Commission for the Protection of Child Rights. The report revealed that 21% of such cases occurred in children’s homes, while 4% were reported in schools. These findings have prompted the commission to launch awareness campaigns targeting parents, teachers, and law enforcement.
An analysis of 4,663 cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act revealed that 988 incidents occurred in children’s homes, 725 in the accused’s residences, and 935 in public places.
The statistics underscore the urgent need for robust protective measures to safeguard children across all settings.
