A 22-year-old woman was arrested by the Kandamangalam police for allegedly burning her mother-in-law, Rani, alive with the help of her boyfriend on the eve of the Deepavali festival. The arrests of the woman Swetha and her boyfriend, Sathish Kumar, took place on Friday, November 15, 2024, following a complaint filed by Rani’s younger son and an extensive investigation. The incident occurred in N.R. Palayam, Kandamangalam.
According to police reports, Rani was admitted to JIPMER hospital with severe burn injuries sustained on the eve of the festival. She succumbed to her injuries the following day. At the time of the incident, only Swetha was present at home, as the other family members, including her husband, were away for work.
Initially, the incident was believed to be accidental or a case of self-immolation. Swetha had alerted the neighbors about the fire. Police revealed that Swetha had married Rani’s elder son, Karunamurthi, in July 2024.
However, suspicions arose when Rani’s younger son questioned the circumstances of the fire. Investigations uncovered that Swetha and Sathish had poured kerosene on Rani and set her ablaze. Police suspect that the murder was motivated by Rani discovering Swetha’s illicit affair.
