The boy, who suffered severe injuries after being beaten with a stick and iron rod and burnt with a hot steam iron, is currently receiving treatment at Government Rajindra Hospital in Patiala.
A woman has been arrested for allegedly torturing a 10-year-old boy for “not performing household chores to her satisfaction.” The child, who was severely beaten with a stick and iron rod and burnt with a hot steam iron, is currently undergoing treatment at Government Rajindra Hospital in Patiala.
According to reports, the boy had been adopted by a woman, who later placed him in the care of the accused, Mani Sharma, who subjected him to abuse.
On Monday, Punjab Child Rights Commission Chairperson Kanwardeep Singh visited the victim and assured action against the accused.
The woman has been charged under Sections 115(2), 127(3), and 351 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act.
The case came to light after a Patiala-based NGO lodged a police complaint following reports from neighbours about the child’s mistreatment. District Child Protection Officer Shaina Kapoor stated that the boy had burn injuries and bruises all over his body and was in severe trauma.
Patiala Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohammad Sarfaraz Alam confirmed that the accused had been taken into custody. Another woman, Sarla Devi, who had adopted the boy from his biological father in January last year, has also been named in the case but is yet to be arrested.
Rajindra Hospital’s Medical Superintendent Dr. Girish Sahni reported that the boy is in a stable condition. “He has no internal injuries but has burns on his face and back, along with minor bruises all over his body,” he said.
