Varanasi: In a coordinated effort by Robertsganj and Rampur Barkonia police, a seven-day-old baby boy was safely recovered on Tuesday from a woman named Mamata (32) and her relative Shrinath. The infant was reunited with his mother, Poonam, a resident of Naugarh in the Chandauli district.

According to Sonbhadra ASP (Headquarters) Anil Kumar, the police teams used CCTV footage, local leads, and intelligence inputs to trace the baby. They conducted a raid at a house in the Rampur area under Rampur Barkonia police station, leading to the arrest of Mamata and Shrinath, along with the rescued child.

During questioning, Mamata revealed she had three children from her first husband, who died from a snakebite. She later started living with her relative, Shrinath, who agreed to marry her only if she bore his child. As Mamata had undergone a tubectomy, she hatched a plan.

Pretending to be pregnant, she stopped staying with Shrinath and began visiting the medical college hospital frequently. On May 27, Poonam gave birth to a baby boy at the same hospital. Posing as an attendant for a patient, Mamata became acquainted with Poonam and her family.

On Monday morning, while Poonam was occupied changing bed sheets, Mamata abducted the baby and fled. Upon discovering her child missing, Poonam raised an alarm, prompting her family to inform Robertsganj police. CCTV footage confirmed Mamata’s involvement in the abduction. SP Sonbhadra then deployed four police teams to rescue the baby and apprehend the accused.
