Pune: A 26-year-old woman from Malwadi, identified as Ambika alias Neha Anandsingh Thakur, was arrested on Thursday for possessing 170 vials of mephentermine sulphate injections (IP Termiva), a synthetic sympathomimetic drug used to treat hypotension.

The Hadapsar police presented Thakur before a magisterial court in Wanowrie, where the judge ordered her custodial remand until December 30. Assistant Public Prosecutor Aamrapali Kasture argued that her interrogation was necessary to identify the source of the injections.

Sub-inspector Mahesh Kawale revealed that a tip-off led the police to Thakur, an unemployed ninth-grade dropout, who was allegedly selling the injections to young people in Hadapsar for ₹500 per vial, despite the retail price being ₹334. Upon investigation, police recovered 120 vials from her residence and an additional 50 vials from a courier parcel.

Kawale further stated that Thakur sourced the vials through an online marketplace and intended to sell them to acquaintances as a means to earn quick money. The drugs were reportedly used for intoxication.

The operation was carried out with officials from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Samples of the recovered injections were handed over to the FDA for analysis, which confirmed that the drug is a synthetic sympathomimetic used to treat hypotension. Additionally, it was noted that the drug has stimulant properties similar to amphetamines and is sometimes misused by bodybuilders to enhance muscle mass, making it potentially addictive.
