Woman Arrested for Killing Newborn Due to Fear of Social Stigma

A 26-year-old woman was arrested in Delhi for allegedly killing her newborn baby boy. According to police reports, the woman feared the social stigma attached to having a child outside of marriage.

- Incident Discovery: On July 28, a woman reported to the police control room that her house help had thrown a plastic bag containing the body of a newborn in the garbage at a Patel Nagar residence.
- Accused’s Background: The accused woman is divorced, originally from Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh, and was working as a domestic help in the Patel Nagar house since October 2023.
- Reason for the Act: Police say the woman killed the baby due to fear of social stigma after the child’s father refused to support her upon learning of the pregnancy.
- Circumstances of Birth and Death: On July 27, while the house owners were away, the woman gave birth in the bathroom, allegedly strangled the baby with a cloth, and placed the body in a plastic bag in the building’s dustbin.
Police Action and Investigation
- Arrest: The woman was arrested and placed in a women’s shelter during the investigation.
- Charges: A case was registered under sections 103(1) and 238(A) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Patel Nagar police station.
- Post-Mortem Findings: The infant died due to “the cumulative effect of ante-mortem craniocerebral injuries and ligature strangulation.”
