Vijayawada: A 39-year-old woman, Ganta Elishamma, from Devarampadu village in Ongole mandal, was arrested by Prakasam police for multiple thefts involving the use of sedatives. The police recovered 460 grams of gold jewellery worth around Rs 35 lakh and sedative tablets used in the crimes, according to SP A. R. Damodar.
Elishamma, who had a history of criminal activities and was previously arrested in Vijayawada, reportedly drew inspiration for her modus operandi from a TV serial. She obtained a prescription for sleeping pills by claiming health issues and used these drugs to execute her thefts.
Her targets were mostly elderly women attending weddings and other gatherings. She befriended them, gained their trust through repeated visits, and then spiked their drinks with sedatives. Once the victims were unconscious, she stole their gold ornaments. She also posed as a customer in jewellery stores and stole items during her visits.
Her crimes spanned multiple police station jurisdictions, including Tanguturu, Kothapatnam, Ongole Taluka, Ongole 1 Town, Ongole 2 Town, N.G. Padu, and Kandukur. She committed nine thefts using sedatives and two thefts in jewellery shops. Tragically, two elderly women lost their lives due to her actions.
A special investigation team led by Tanguturu SI V. Nagamalleswara Rao and Singarayakonda SI B. Mahendra tracked her down. Elishamma was arrested on Wednesday in Balaji Nagar, Ongole. Some of the stolen gold was pawned in Ongole, Podili, Inkollu, and Addanki. Further investigations are ongoing.
