Brazilian police have arrested a woman in connection with the poisoning of a Christmas cake that caused the deaths of three people. According to CNN, the incident occurred on December 23 in Torres, a small seaside town in southern Brazil. Three women died, and three others fell ill after consuming the cake. Arsenic was found in the blood of three family members, as reported by CNN Brazil.
Marcos Veloso, the lead investigator, stated during a Monday press conference that there was “strong evidence” implicating the arrested family member. While the police did not disclose her identity, Brazilian media reported that she was the daughter-in-law of the woman who had prepared the cake.
The gathering took place on December 23 when several family members celebrated the holiday season together. Seven people were present in the room when the cake, a traditional Brazilian Christmas dessert known as Bolo de Natal, was served. Six people ate the cake, while one refused. All six who consumed it later became ill, and three tragically lost their lives.
The cake was prepared by 60-year-old Zeli dos Anjos, who is currently hospitalised and fighting for her life. Her two sisters and niece died after eating the cake, which is suspected to have been laced with arsenic. Guests reportedly noticed a “spicy” and “unpleasant” taste while eating the cake. Anjos warned them to stop eating, but it was already too late.
Police arrested Zeli dos Anjos’ daughter-in-law on Sunday, January 5, in connection with the crime.
