The 69th edition of the National Film Awards was announced on Thursday through a press conference held by the Jury at the National Media Center in New Delhi. The Jury members of the National Film Awards presented the list of awardees in the categories of feature films, non-feature films, and best script to Union I&B Minister Anurag Thakur. A total of 280 films in 28 different languages were submitted for consideration for the 2021 awards. The award ceremony consisted of 31 categories for feature films, 24 categories for non-feature films, and 3 categories for scriptwriting related to cinema.
Noteworthy figures from the film industry, namely Kriti Sanon from “Mimi,” filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali of “Gangubai Kathiawadi,” and director Shoojit Sircar of “Sardar Udham,” expressed their delight following their films’ significant victories at the 69th National Film Awards. The film “Mimi” earned recognition as Kriti Sanon received the Best Actress award, while Pankaj Tripathi was honored with the Best Supporting Actor award for his performance. Notably, Kriti Sanon shared the best actress award with Alia Bhatt from “Gangubai Kathiawadi,” a film that secured victories in four additional categories. Kriti Sanon expressed the profound significance of being acknowledged by the esteemed jury of the National Film Awards.
“Sardar Udham” emerged triumphant at the awards, securing accolades in five categories. Director Shoojit Sircar, along with lead actor Vicky Kaushal and the rest of the team, dedicated these honors to the memory of the late Irrfan Khan. Notably, Irrfan Khan was initially slated to portray the central character in the film, but due to health challenges stemming from a rare form of cancer, he had to step away. Shoojit Sircar and Irrfan Khan had previously collaborated on the film “Piku” in 2015. The passing of the actor in April 2020 deeply affected the industry. In an interview with PTI, Sircar expressed, “My team, my producer Ronnie Lahiri, Sheel, Vicky Kaushal, and the entire ‘Sardar Udham’ team want to dedicate this National Award to the late Irrfan Khan.” This acknowledgment holds a heartfelt sentiment, underscoring the impact of Irrfan Khan’s contribution to the world of cinema.
