Wikileaks Founder Released from Prison after Reaching Plea Deal with US Government
The founder of Wikileaks, Julian Assange, has been released from Belmarsh prison and flown out of the UK as he prepares to enter a guilty plea as part of a deal with the U.S. Justice Department. Assange, 52, will plead guilty to one count of conspiring to obtain and disclose classified US national defense documents, according to a filing in the US District Court for the Northern Mariana Islands.
Wikileaks was founded in 2006 as an online whistleblower platform for people to submit classified material such as documents and videos anonymously. Assange was charged in the US during the administration of Donald Trump, which decided to charge him in 2019 with 17 counts of breaching the Espionage Act.
According to a new filing from the DOJ, proceedings in the Mariana Islands are due to take place on Wednesday morning, where Assange will plead guilty to an Espionage Act charge of conspiring to unlawfully obtain and disseminate classified national defense information. The charges against Assange in the US stem from one of the largest publications of classified information in American history, which took place during the first term of Barack Obama’s presidency. Assange was accused by the US government of conspiring with Chelsea Manning, a military intelligence analyst, to disclose tens of thousands of activity reports about the war in Afghanistan.
In the meantime, Wikileaks tweeted on social media platform X, “Julian Assange is free. He left Belmarsh maximum security prison on the morning of 24 June, after having spent 1901 days there.” Assange had been detained in the UK for five years as he fought extradition charges by the US, which sought to prosecute him for revealing military secrets. The UK government approved his extradition in June 2022. He is scheduled to appear in the US territory on Wednesday.
