A set of shocking events happened on February 9 in Pune when a number of BJP & Shiv Sena members assaulted Nikhil Wagle, a renowned journalist while he was on his way to attend a ‘Nirbhay bano sabha’ event which was organized as a protest against a scuffle that had erupted last week when members of ABVP attacked the theatre students from Lalit Kala Kendra department in Savitribai Phule University, allegedly over a disgraceful portrayal of Ram & Sita by a group of first-year students, which according to a senior professor was a play revolving around “what an artist shouldn’t do” depicting the backstage life of actors and their ethics, describing it as an adaptation of the famous Dashatavar play from the Konkan region of Maharashtra.
Wagle was illegally detained over security reasons by the police with Asim Sarode, a human rights lawyer in his house with around 30-40 cops stationed outside as well, they suggested him not to go as he could be ambushed by BJP workers and was compelled to sign a statement, refraining him from saying anything that could stoke more outrage, especially anything against Modi & Advani.
After 4 hours of restraint wagle grew restless over why he was detained when the goons roamed freely with no fear of any authority, despite the persuasion he was determined to go to the event.
When they finally departed they were met with a mob who threw eggs & ink over their car, shattered their windows & attempted to pull them out and only 6-7 policemen out of the 30-40 that were outside their house were behind to protect them, as seen in the video. According to the Indian express several women workers of the Maha Vikas Aghadi who escorted them to the venue were also attacked in the presence of police personnel.
Describing the attack, he told Newslaundry “It was a mob lynching attempt on me. It was traumatic, a narrow escape from death…I am still in shock because of the intensity of the attack and the hate and about the fact that how did they know what route would we take” it’s upsetting to see police failing to prevent the mob when they had predicted the same.
Around 10 BJP members have been arrested in the case of assault on the journalist.
It’s worth noting that an FIR against Wagle had previously been lodged by a BJP leader Sunil Deodhar over his “defamatory” remarks on a post condemning Narendra Modi & Advani over the latter being awarded with Bharat Ratna which said “from one rioter to another”.
