Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann’s comments on the Centre selecting Amritsar as the landing site for Indian deportees from the US have sparked a major controversy, with the BJP accusing the AAP leader of “degrading his own state.”
Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann questioned the External Affairs Ministry on the “criteria” used to select Amritsar as the landing site for the US military aircraft carrying deported Indian immigrants. He accused the Centre of choosing Amritsar to “defame Punjab,” suggesting that while PM Modi and former US President Trump were meeting, US officials were simultaneously detaining Indian migrants. “Is this the gift Trump has given?” Mann asked during a press conference.
The BJP swiftly criticised Mann’s remarks, urging him to avoid politicising sensitive issues. BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal accused AAP leaders of prioritising politics over national security. BJP MLA Manjinder Singh Sirsa blamed travel agents for deceiving Punjab’s youth into selling their land for illegal migration to the US and accused the Punjab government and police of enabling such activities by taking bribes. He argued that AAP had failed Punjab, claiming people were desperate to leave the state rather than return.
Fatehjung Singh Bajwa, vice president of the BJP’s Punjab unit, further criticised Mann, accusing him of “degrading his own state.”
