Raebareli (News India Official): Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi revealed that the Congress party wanted Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati to work with them in the recent parliamentary elections. Addressing students at the Mool Bharti hostel in his constituency in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh, Gandhi expressed disappointment at Mayawati’s decision to contest the election independently and claimed that a united front could have easily defeated the BJP.

While interacting with the students, Gandhi asked, “Why doesn’t Mayawati fight the elections properly?” He said, “We wanted Behenji to join us and fight the elections against the BJP. If the three parties had come together, the BJP would never have won.” He stressed that the doors of the India Alliance are open for her.

Mayawati immediately hit back, accusing the Congress of “double standards” and “casteist attitude”. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the BSP chief wrote, “In states where the Congress is strong, they show hostility towards the BSP and its supporters. But in UP, where the Congress is weak, they suddenly want to form an alliance. If this is not double standards, what is?”

Mayawati criticised the Congress, saying that in past alliances it failed to transfer its vote base to the BSP, causing her party to suffer. “Whenever the BSP formed an alliance with casteist parties like the Congress, our votes got transferred to them, but they never gave anything in return. This has always caused losses to the BSP,” she said.

It is noteworthy that the Congress and the Samajwadi Party (SP) contested the 2024 elections together under the Bharat Alliance, while the BSP had decided to contest alone.

During his visit to Rae Bareli, Rahul Gandhi not only talked about politics but also encouraged students to take responsibility for their own future. “The Constitution has given you equal rights and opportunities to shape your future. Recognise your rights,” he told the young audience.

Gandhi also attacked the BJP and the RSS, particularly over their stance on the English language. “Mohan Bhagwat says speak in Hindi, yet BJP and RSS leaders send their children to English-medium schools and even to England for studies,” he said.

Describing English as a “weapon”, Gandhi urged students to adopt the language. “English is your biggest weapon. It allows you to go anywhere – Tamil Nadu, Japan, Mumbai. Even Tata companies hold meetings in English, not Hindi,” he said.

He further stressed, “They don’t want Dalits, backward communities or poor people to learn English because it challenges their monopoly. But English is the key to your success. If you want to talk to the President of America or Russia, which language will you use? English.”

Adding a touch of local pride to his visit, Rahul Gandhi also unveiled a statue of Rana Beni Madhav Singh, an iconic figure from the region. The event highlighted Gandhi’s efforts to connect with his constituency and honour its heritage.

As the war of words between Rahul Gandhi and Mayawati continues, the political landscape remains tense. While Gandhi dreams of a united opposition to defeat the BJP, Mayawati’s sharp replies show that trust between the two parties is at an all-time low. Will they ever be able to bridge the gap, or is this just another chapter in India’s ever-evolving political drama?

One thing is clear: the battle of Uttar Pradesh is not over yet, and every word spoken could shape the future of Indian politics.
