Vladimir Putin to Seek Re-Election, Extending His Rule Until 2030

Russian President Vladimir Putin has reportedly decided to run in the upcoming March presidential election, a move that could keep him in power until at least 2030. Six anonymous sources with knowledge of Kremlin politics shared this information with Reuters, citing the sensitivity of the matter.
Putin, who has already served as president for a longer period than any Russian ruler since Josef Stalin, celebrated his 71st birthday on October 7. His decision to run for re-election has not been officially announced, but preparations for the campaign are said to be underway.
With approval ratings around 80% inside Russia and the support of the state, state media, and minimal mainstream public dissent, Putin is almost certain to secure another term in office. According to one source, “The decision has been made – he will run.” A hint about his candidacy is expected in the coming weeks.
Despite facing no significant competition, Putin’s extended rule comes at a time when he grapples with unprecedented challenges, including the conflict in Ukraine, Western sanctions, and internal issues. The war in Ukraine has resulted in a major standoff with the West, while sanctions have had a significant impact on Russia’s economy. In June, Putin confronted a failed mutiny led by Russia’s most powerful mercenary, Yevgeny Prigozhin, who died in a plane crash two months later.
The West has accused Putin of being a war criminal and a dictator, while the Kremlin frames the conflict as part of a broader struggle with the United States. Russia’s economic growth is expected to outpace the European Union’s, and the country’s weapons production is soaring.
While Putin’s decision to seek re-election may come as no surprise, it reinforces his determination to lead Russia through a challenging period and continue his long-standing role on the global stage.
