The Sri Lankan Cabinet has approved the issuance of free visas to several countries, including India, as a pilot project until March 31, 2024. This initiative aims to boost Sri Lanka’s tourism industry, which has been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and internal crises.
Along with India, free visas will also be extended to China, Russia, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, and Thailand. This means that Indian tourists no longer require a visa to visit Sri Lanka. The pilot project has already commenced and is expected to attract a significant number of Indian tourists, as they accounted for approximately 20% of all visitors to Sri Lanka in the first nine months of this year.
Sri Lanka’s tourism industry has set a new target of attracting 2 million visitors by 2023, surpassing the previous goal of 1.5 million. This move to extend free visas to citizens of these seven nations demonstrates Sri Lanka’s commitment to supporting the recovery and growth of its tourism industry.
