Riyan Parag highlighted the guidance he received from Virat Kohli, which led to his significant comeback following an incredible performance in the Deodhar Trophy. Riyan Parag stole the spotlight in the just-concluded 2023 season of the Deodhar Trophy, although Mayank Agarwal’s South Zone won the Trophy.

After finishing the season with the most runs, sixes, and third-most wickets, the versatile player from the East Zone was named the Player of the Competition. He also added to his tally for the competition. With a 102-ball 131 against the North Zone and a 68-ball 102 against the West Zone, he now has a total of five centuries. It would have been his third, but he came close to the triple-figure milestone against the South Zone, being dismissed for 95.

The outstanding season came barely two months after a disastrous performance for the Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2023, where he was also dropped from the playing XI. Despite his tough situation, Parag was seen chatting with his hero Virat Kohli, whose portrait he uses as his WhatsApp profile image.

In an interview with the Indian Express following his Deodhar Trophy performance, Parag revealed the guidance from the former Indian captain Virat Kohli that inspired his remarkable comeback. He quoted “Mai puri baat nhi bta paunga” (“I cannot explain everything), but ‘someone successful for almost a year won’t be wrong with just some failures.’

“Whatever occurs during the IPL is the fact that the competition moves so quickly that losing in both matches causes one to doubt oneself, as everybody makes errors, and I’m no exception because, when two or three games don’t go your way, you feel compelled to alter your strategy and work ethic,” he explained.

He continued by saying, “It was him telling me that, ‘Take a step back and acknowledge that what you’re experiencing is a difficult phase, but that doesn’t mean you should abandon the method that is currently working effectively.”

He stated, “People are bothered by me chewing gum. It’s an issue if my collar is up. I celebrate after making a difficult catch. They have an issue with my gaming and golfing habits during my spare time.”

“I know why people dislike me. There is a set of rules for playing cricket: the t-shirt must be tucked in, the collar should be down, everyone should be respected, and don’t sledge anyone. But I am exactly the opposite,” he explained.

At the young age of 21, Parag has experienced every aspect of his professional life. There were achievements, such as the U-19 World Cup victory in 2018, along with some spectacular IPL performances that led the Rajasthan Royals to sign him for INR 3.8 crore in December. However, there were also hardships, such as the 2023 IPL season, which faced brutal criticism on social media.
