Virat Kohli, the Indian cricket captain, achieved a significant milestone during the 2023 Cricket World Cup, where he equalled Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most centuries in one-day internationals (ODIs). This historic feat occurred on Kohli’s 35th birthday in India’s 8th match of the tournament against South Africa at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Kohli’s century marked his 49th in ODIs, a remarkable achievement that puts him on par with the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. Notably, Kohli reached this milestone in his 289th ODI, while Tendulkar had done so in his second-to-last ODI appearance, which was his 462nd match. Tendulkar’s record of 100 international centuries remains intact, but Kohli’s consistency and prowess have put him within reach of that milestone.
During the 2023 World Cup, Kohli demonstrated extraordinary form, surpassing the 500-run mark in a single edition of the tournament, joining an elite group with Sachin Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma. His highest ODI score of 183 came against Pakistan in 2012, a match where he partnered with Tendulkar in a memorable chase.
Kohli’s performance in the World Cup has been pivotal for India, showcasing his ability to anchor the team and lead from the front. His consistency and remarkable career trajectory have solidified his status as one of the greatest cricketers of his generation.
