Tension erupted into violence in Mewat Nuh, a district close to Gurugram, Haryana, as clashes between two communities turned violent on Monday. The exact reasons behind the outbreak of violence remain uncertain, with speculations pointing toward two potential triggers. Firstly, rumors are circulating about the controversial Monu Manesar’s alleged involvement in the yatra. Secondly, the attack on the yatra and the temple has also been considered as a possible cause. However, according to the police statement, the brawl began when a group of young men decided to stop and attack the Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s ‘Brij Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra’ near Khedla Mod in Nuh, and rocks were thrown at the rally, leading to the vandalism of several police cars.
The situation worsened as communal violence spread across Gurugram, as mobs rampaged through the city, setting fire to several enterprises and causing extensive damage in the region. The Anjuman Jama Masjid was also destroyed, and the Naib Imam was killed during the clashes. Tragically, five lives were lost, including those of a shop owner and a participant in the Vishwa Hindu Parishad rally. The mobs set fire to several enterprises and destroyed three of the city’s regions.
In the violence, two home guards, identified as Neeraj and Gursev from Kherki Daula police station in Gurugram, lost their lives. The death toll increased when two rally participants, Shakti, a 35-year-old Nuh shop owner, and Abhishek, a 24-year-old from Panipat, were also killed during the violence, bringing the total fatalities since Monday to five.
To curb the escalating violence, Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav issued an order that included cutting off internet services, implementing restricting orders, and announcing the closure of all schools, colleges, and educational institutions in the Gurugram district until Wednesday.
Chief Minister M L Khattar appealed for peace and unity, emphasizing that disputes should be resolved through communication, respecting the Indian Constitution. However, questions arose about the lack of timely warnings from the local government and police, especially regarding the presence of a controversial figure at the Yatra.
Opposition parties criticized the BJP-led Haryana government for administrative failures, holding them accountable for the tragic incident. The Supreme Court allowed Vishwa Hindu Parishad rallies in Delhi but stressed the importance of preventing hate speech and ensuring adequate security and video surveillance.
As the whole conflict of violence revolves around a person named Monu Manesar, the question arises: who is Monu Manesar?
Monu Manesar, also known as Mohit Yadav, is an accomplice of the Bajrang Dal and a cow crusader from Manesar, which is near Gurugram. He gained recognition as the leader of the Goraksha Dal, a Bajrang Dal cow protection mission group in Haryana.
Monu Manesar’s attainment of recognition is inextricably linked to his aggressive behavior towards accused cattle traffickers. His actions go beyond simple vigilantism. He has a sizable internet presence, with almost two lakh YouTube subscribers and 83,000 Facebook followers.
Monu Manesar has a polytechnic diploma and entered the Bajrang Dal while still in university.
Several speculations have also been made regarding why the local government administration, along with the police officials, raised no alarming bells when Monu Manesar, a cow protector, accused of the slaying of two Muslim cow merchants, managed to escape from government authorities.
Nasir and Junaid, both natives of Ghatmeeka village in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur district, were reportedly abducted by cow vigilantes on February 15, and their bodies were discovered the next day in a burnt vehicle in Loharu, Haryana’s Bhiwani.
The footage was shared by Monu Manesar on social media, stating that he was going to be at the yearly sacred rally passing through Nuh. However, he was stopped by the law enforcers in Manesar and wasn’t able to join the rally. Nonetheless, rumors have surfaced that Monu Manesar has joined the yatra.
