Tensions flared up again on Sandeshkhali island in West Bengal today as a violent clash erupted between supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Trinamool Congress party. Tatan Gayen, an aide of Trinamool MLA Sukumar Mahto, was allegedly attacked by BJP supporters during a protest organized by the party.
The incident occurred in close proximity to the local police station, prompting authorities to swiftly respond and deploy riot control forces to the scene.
The BJP protest was organized to accuse the Trinamool Congress government of filing false cases against their party workers. The remote Sandeshkhali island has gained national attention after residents accused local Trinamool leaders, led by the expelled leader Sheikh Shahjahan, of land grabbing, extortion, and sexual harassment. Shahjahan is currently in the custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with a mob attack on Enforcement Directorate officials.
The situation took a shocking turn last month when a viral video purportedly showed local BJP leader Gangadhar Koyal claiming that no rapes or sexual harassment occurred in Sandeshkhali and that women were convinced to file complaints at the behest of BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the Opposition in the Bengal Assembly. Both the BJP and Koyal have alleged that the video was doctored.
In another startling development, a woman has come forward alleging that individuals linked to the BJP made her sign a blank paper and then wrote a false rape complaint in her name.
These developments have ignited a political firestorm, with the Trinamool Congress accusing the BJP of fabricating stories to tarnish its image for political gain, while the BJP supporters staged protests demanding action against local Trinamool leaders for allegedly spreading fake videos.
The situation remains tense, with both sides trading accusations and counter-accusations, highlighting the intense political rivalry between the two parties in the region.
