Kolkata: In a shocking turn of events, a mob broke into R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital minutes before midnight, vandalizing the emergency building where a doctor was raped and murdered in the early hours of August 9. The attack on the hospital and the subsequent violence have left the medical community and the city in shock.
The mob, consisting of approximately 30 to 40 individuals, stormed the hospital premises, causing widespread damage. The protesters also vandalized the site where doctors have been protesting since the tragic incident on August 9. Stones were pelted, and several policemen sustained injuries. Police vehicles were also damaged in the chaos.
Eyewitnesses reported that the police stood guard but did not resist the mob initially. As the situation escalated, the police ran for shelter. The Hindu’s correspondent on the scene took refuge in an auditorium along with students and senior doctors. A postgraduate student described the scene: “They have completely vandalized our protest site. Our days of protest have been destroyed, and it’s now broken down to the ground.”
For nearly an hour, a standoff ensued between the police and the protesters. Doctors and students hiding inside the hospital issued a video statement, expressing their terror and pleading for police and administrative intervention. Despite the police resorting to tear gas, they struggled to control the mob.
Condemning the violence, Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee stated, “The hooliganism and vandalism at R.G. Kar tonight have exceeded all acceptable limits.” He added that he had spoken to the Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, urging swift action to identify and hold accountable those responsible for the violence.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal arrived at the scene in an attempt to manage the situation. Speaking to journalists, Mr. Goyal condemned the violence and emphasized that the police had conducted a transparent investigation and had arrested the prime accused in the case. He criticized the media for portraying the police in a negative light, saying, “I am telling you from the core of my heart that we have not tried to save anyone.”
The case has now been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), as the city grapples with the aftermath of this violent episode. The medical community and the public await further developments as authorities work to restore order and justice.
