Tensions arose in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand after the encroachment drive in Banbhulpura led to the demolition of the illegally constructed mosque, which was claimed to be built over government land. The demolition drive was carried out after the court’s orders.

This led to enraged locals asserting the demolition to be unjust and started pelting stones at the police officials and administration authorities and setting vehicles on fire, resulting in them sustaining injuries. The mob also surrounded the police station, trapping police officers and journalists. The situation quickly escalated and led to the requirement for higher intervention, causing the state government of Uttarakhand to impose Shoot-on-sight and a curfew in the province of Haldwani. Internet services have been suspended, and the schools have been shut down due to the ongoing incidents. Barricades have been set up to prevent further expansion of violence in the area.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami condemned the violence and convened an emergency meeting with government and law officials to come up with solutions for the violence. According to SSP Prahlad Meena, the residents were given prior notice before the madrasa was demolished. He further stated that SDM Paritosh Verma, City Magistrate Richa Singh, and Municipal Commissioner Pankaj Upadhyay were present there when the demolition was done.

Tensions had been simmering in the area due to a separate Supreme Court order to demolish over 4,000 homes deemed to be built on railway land, sparking protests and fears of displacement. As of February 9th, 2024, the casualties have stated at least 5 dead and more than 250 people injured. The curfew remains in place, and the situation is tense. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the violence and identify those responsible to take strict actions against them.
