Wrestler Vinesh Phogat not only created history by defeating Cuba’s Eusnelis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semi-final match of women’s 50 kg wrestling at the Paris Olympics but also ensured a medal for India. Vinesh is the first Indian female wrestler to reach the final of the Olympics. Earlier on Tuesday, Vinesh had made a big upset in the Olympic Games and defeated the current champion Yui Susaki. Vinesh had made it to the semi-finals by defeating Oksana Livach of Ukraine in the quarter-finals.
In the semi-final match against Vinesh, Lopez tried to hold Vinesh’s leg in the initial period but due to strong defensive play, the Indian wrestler got a chance to take a one-point lead. After taking the lead in the initial period, Vinesh started aggressively in the second and took a 5-0 lead with a strong hold on the rival wrestler’s right leg. After this, the Cuban wrestler tried to get hold of Vinesh but her attempt failed due to Vinesh’s excellent defense and in the end, Vinesh won 5-0.
Months before fulfilling her dream of securing an Olympic medal, Vinesh Phogat was angry with the system. But even threats, police custody, and criticism for leading the protest could not shake his courage. Vinesh faced many challenges, from facing opposition from villagers who considered wrestling a boy’s sport to losing her father at the age of 9, to taking on influential sports administrators.
The journey of this Haryana stalwart to Paris was not easy and a lot was at stake. Instead of succumbing to the circumstances, she chose the path of fighting and created history. The way she faced challenges on and off the mat, she has emerged as an example
Instead of getting depressed about what happened, she faced it bravely and became the first Indian female wrestler to reach the Olympic final, writing a new story of courage and fighting spirit. During that entire period, Vinesh had a firm belief that her fight was right. After this, she focused on getting the ticket for the Paris Olympics which was a new challenge. She had to go down to 50 kg instead of 53 kg. There were many trial matches before the Olympic qualifiers and during this time she also had to undergo knee surgery. Her career was once considered almost over due to an ACL injury in the Rio Olympics.
Vinesh created history
Vinesh is the first woman to reach the wrestling final in the Olympics. Before Vinesh, Sushil Kumar and Ravi Dahiya have been successful in making their place in the wrestling finals. However, both had to be satisfied with silver. In such a situation, Vinesh has an important opportunity to get India its first gold in wrestling. India has a total of seven Olympic medals in wrestling so far, which includes two silver and five bronze medals. After hockey, India has won the most medals in the Olympics from wrestling.
