Vinesh Phogat to Contest in Haryana Assembly Elections on Congress Ticket
Indian Wrestler Vinesh Phogat was allegedly issued a show-cause notice from Indian Railways following her meeting with Rahul Gandhi earlier this week. This claim was put forth by party leaders on Friday. Phogat’s resignation from her post and subsequent move to join the Congress before the Haryana Assembly election has stirred controversy. The 30-year-old wrestler announced her decision to separate from Indian Railways on Friday.
There is a growing buzz about her potential political debut. It is now being speculated that Phogat and fellow wrestler Bajrang Punia may contest the upcoming state elections on a Congress ticket. Congress leader KC Venugopal has urged the Railway authorities to refrain from engaging in political activities and instead focus on fulfilling the necessary formalities to ensure relief for Vinesh Phogat.
Phogat also lauded the party for understanding their pain and tears amidst police action during the Jantar Mantar protests in 2023. “I express my gratitude to the Congress party. It is often said that in tough times, one realizes who truly stands by them. When we were facing adversity, all political parties except the BJP extended their support to us. I take pride in being part of a party that stands in solidarity with women and is prepared to fight for their rights from the streets to the Parliament,” she stated.
“The fight is still ongoing in court, but we are confident we will win. Today, with the new platform we are getting, we will serve the nation. We will work as hard for our people as we play our game with passion.” She also wanted to assure her sisters that she is with them, saying, “If no one else is there for you, I will be, and the Congress party will be too. I have felt this, and I assure you we will be there for sure.”
Phogat and Punia were key leaders in the wrestlers’ protest against former BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and the Wrestling Federation of India following sexual harassment allegations.
