Vinesh Phogat joined the farmers at the Sambhu border as their protest, demanding a legal guarantee for the Minimum Support Price (MSP), marked its 200th day.
Olympian Vinesh Phogat, on Saturday, chose not to comment on her political plans while joining the protesting farmers at the Sambhu border. She participated in the protest, which reached its 200th day on August 31, as farmers demanded a legal guarantee for the Minimum Support Price (MSP). When asked if she would run for elections if nominated by Congress in Haryana, the Indian wrestler responded, “I don’t want to discuss this. I have come to meet my family members (the farmers), and if this is sensationalized, their struggle will be overshadowed. The focus should be on the farming community, not on me. I am a sportsperson and a citizen of India; elections are not my concern. My priority is the welfare of farmers,” she told reporters.
Earlier, former Haryana Chief Minister and opposition leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda dismissed speculations about Vinesh Phogat joining Congress, calling it a “hypothetical question.” Phogat recently retired after being disqualified from her gold medal bout at the Paris Olympics due to being overweight. While addressing the farmers at the Sambhu border, Phogat emphasized that raising concerns should not always be seen as politically driven. “When people raise issues, they should not be viewed through political, religious, or communal lenses. The government should listen to our family (the farmers). They have the right to voice their opinions. As someone from a farming background, I understand the hardships, having seen my mother’s struggle to raise me,” she added.
Vinesh Phogat, a renowned athlete and supporter of the farmers’ movement, was honored by the farmers during the day’s events. It has been a challenging month for her, as she reached the final of the women’s 50 kg event but returned to India without a medal after being defeated by Sarah Ann Hildebrandt of the United States on August 7.
