Vinesh Phogat Hints at Return After Paris Olympics Disqualification, Receives Warm Homecoming
Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who recently announced her retirement following a disqualification at the Paris Olympics, has now suggested a possible return, rekindling hope among her fans.
Phogat conveyed her heartfelt appreciation for the warm and enthusiastic welcome she received upon her arrival at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.
Phogat was welcomed and honored with a gold medal by the elders of her native village, Balali in Haryana. Despite the late hour, hundreds of villagers gathered to celebrate her return on Saturday.
Phogat, who was disqualified from the gold medal bout at the Paris Olympics for being 100 grams overweight, and whose appeal for a silver medal was dismissed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), received a heartfelt reception from her community.
During a media address in Balali, Vinesh Phogat expressed that missing out on the Olympic medal is the most significant setback of her life. She acknowledged that the overwhelming support from her community will provide her with the strength to recover.
Vinesh mentioned that she is uncertain about her future in wrestling, stating, “I can’t say if I’ll quit wrestling or not.” She also affirmed that her 1.5-year struggle against the wrestling federation will persist.
While addressing the crowd, Vinesh Phogat stated, “Our struggle is far from over, and we will persist in our efforts. I pray that the truth will ultimately prevail.”
“As I got love from my fellow Indians, my village, and my family members, I guess I would get some courage to make this wound heal. Maybe, I could return to wrestling,” said the 29-year-old Vinesh.
