An absurd plea was filed today in the circuit bench of the Calcutta High Court by the Bengal wing of the Hindutva group Vishwa Hindu Parishad, demanding the removal of a lioness named ‘Sita’ who is allegedly within the same enclosure as a lion named ‘Akbar’ in Siliguri’s safari park.
VHP was enraged and denounced the names, saying housing a lioness named Sita with a lion named Akbar is an insult to the Hindu community. Activists named Anup Kumar Mondol & Lakshman Kumar Agarwal filed the case.
Subhankar Dutta, the Advocate representing the VHP said, “It has hurt the religious sentiments of numerous people, and we have therefore moved to the Jalpaiguri circuit bench of the Calcutta High Court demanding the rechristening of the lioness. They were named Akbar & Sita after they came to this park, and we have asked the latter to be changed.” Reportedly, both of them were brought from Tripura, Sephahijala Zoological Park in Bishalgarh on February 12.
However, the authorities have refuted VHP’s claims, saying they were not the ones who named them, and they were already named before they arrived here. According to The Times of India, both the lions have earlier lived together in the same enclosure before.
According to a report by The Telegraph, senior forest department officials were supposedly planning to send a proposal to the CMO (Chief Minister’s Office) regarding naming the lions who had arrived at the park.
