George Galloway, a British left-wing political maverick, was elected as a lawmaker from the town of Rochdale. He vowed to oppose the Labour Party over its stand on Gaza and change the outcome of the national election, which is in its favor.

Galloway won over the Muslim community of Rochdale by supporting a pro-Palestine agenda. His campaign attacked the Labour and Conservative Parties for supporting Israel in the attacks against Hamas. It was an unusual campaign since by-elections focus on local issues. Major foreign affairs are not the focal point of campaigns.

It is the seventh time Galloway will serve in Parliament. It will also be the seventh time he will continue to oppose the Labour Party, his former party. The party ejected Galloway due to his criticisms of the then Prime Minister Tony Blair and his take on the Iraq war.

His win determines how Britain views the Israel-Hamas war. The conflict will enter its fifth month, and British protestors are taking to the streets in support of both regions.

According to Palestinian health authorities, over 30,000 people have died since the war began. These numbers follow the death of 1,200 people who died during the Hamas attacks on October 7. Over 200 Israelis were also taken hostage by Hamas then.

British lawmakers faced several threats since the war began to bring an end to the conflict. Galloway’s return to the Parliament ahead of the national elections will be short-lived. However, he will leave an explosive impact on the government.

Galloway commented that Keir Starmer and Rishi Sunak suffered a sound defeat at Rochdale in the by-elections. A heckler in the crowd aimed to get a rise out of Galloway by questioning his climate change credentials. However, his supporters drowned him out with chants of “Galloway.”

Galloway won over 12,00 votes compared to David Tully, who came in second. Tully was an independent candidate, and he received over 6,000 votes. Azhar Ali, a former Labour Party candidate, came in fourth after the opposition pulled its support over conspiracy theories about Israel.

Richard Tice, the leader of the right-wing Reform-UK party, stated that the campaign was marred by maligning his party and candidates. The Reform-UK candidate came in sixth place.

Galloway and his left-wing Workers Party for Britain will enter the Parliament for the first time. Galloway campaigned for not only Gaza but also spoke about reinstating maternity services in Rochdale.

He aims to challenge the Labour Party, which has given full support to Israel since the October 7 attacks. However, the party has changed its stance and called for a humanitarian ceasefire in the region.
