The US president, Joe Biden, has condemned Russia for its missile strike on Ukraine that killed nearly 38 people. He criticised the attack as a “horrific reminder of Russia’s brutality” and vowed to strengthen Kyiv’s air defenses.

The strike injured about 190 people across the nation, including children who are still in the hospital in the capital, Kyiv.

This announcement from Mr. Biden comes as he plans to host a NATO summit in Washington on Tuesday. He further wishes to strengthen and boost Ukraine’s air defenses.

The NATO summit will be attended by 32 state members, along with their partner countries, to mark the 75th anniversary of the bloc. Mr. Biden is looking forward to welcoming the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, and other NATO leaders.

The main goals of the meeting are to focus on defense and deterrence in the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. “We will be announcing new measures to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses to help protect their cities and civilians from Russian strikes,” Mr. Biden said.

“I will be meeting with President Zelensky to make clear our support for Ukraine is unshakeable,” he added.

The United Nations Security Council will also be meeting on Tuesday at the request of Ukraine.

Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, declared July 9 as a day of mourning following the deadly attacks on the capital.

Two people lost their lives when missiles struck the Ohmatdyt Children’s Hospital, Ukraine’s biggest pediatric facility. A search operation is underway to find survivors.

Mr. Zelensky has been constantly urging Western countries to provide defense support for months due to increased Russian aggression, which has killed several people in recent months. According to UN officials, May was the deadliest month for civilian casualties in almost a year.

Ukraine is in desperate need of newly produced air defense systems, but the West is reluctant to provide them due to unavoidable situations.

On the other hand, Russia claims that a Ukrainian drone strike in the Rostov region sparked a fire that killed nearly four people and injured 20.

Russia denied targeting the Kyiv hospital, claiming it was hit by fragments of a Ukrainian air defense missile, while Ukraine found remnants of a Russian cruise missile.

Ukrainian President Zelensky called the attacks “brutal” and labeled Russian President Putin a “bloody criminal.”

The UK’s new Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, condemned the attack, calling it “the most depraved of actions.”

The UK has been a key ally of Ukraine in the war against Russia. The Prime Minister has vowed to continue supporting Ukraine and is set to meet US President Mr. Biden in Washington.
